6 Quick Tips for Christmas decorations

Thanksgiving week is the best, isn’t it?? Food, family, football, shopping.. and people FINALLY stop unnecessarily telling you that you put your Christmas decorations up too early. Personally, I decorate on November 1. Why? Because Christmas brings me joy and I can.

But, if you are a person that likes to decorate after Thanksgiving, this is the blog for you. Since Christmas is all about giving, I am giving you 3 extra tips in this week’s blog!! So generous of me. I could talk about the best ways to decorate for Christmas all day long, but I decided to narrow it down a bit. Here are 6 tips for curating that cozy Christmas feeling in your home:

  1. use lights and candles

2. gravitate towards deeper tones

3. mix traditional family pieces with new pieces

4. hang wreaths inside

5. bring in warm and fuzzy textures

6. have fun with it

1. use lights and candles

When in doubt, listen to what the Christmas songs say. How many Christmas songs say something about candles or twinkling lights or the fireplace glow?? Pretty much all of them. There is no easier way to create a cozy Christmas atmosphere indoors than with candles and lights. Put candle sticks on your mantle, in your centerpieces, in the windows (like the song says); overdo the lights on the tree, string lights in all of your garland; light the fireplace. It typically does not require any additional purchases but makes a drastic impact on your Christmas decor.

2. gravitate towards deeper tones

We have all walked into Hobby Lobby and seen the aisles upon aisles of Christmas decor. It can be very overwhelming. But, a way to tone down the options is to avoid the bright colors and gravitate towards the rich, deep tones. If you decorate with vibrant reds and greens, the house can start to feel like Whoville. Instead, grab the maroons, burgundies, forest greens, and leather/deep cognac colors. They will create a rich, moody, classic Christmas feel in your home.

3. mix traditional family pieces with new pieces

I love a family heirloom Christmas decoration as much as anyone. Give me all of the ceramic, light-up trees that your great-grandma gave you, the cheesy stockings, etc. But if you are trying to create a designer home for the holidays, you need to pair the family heirlooms with new, more toned-down pieces. For example, hang the cheesy stockings all at one end of the mantle with a timeless garland strung across. Or, place the antique Christmas village homes on a display with new ceramic and bottle-brush trees. This combo will create an intentional feel and make the whole space feel cohesive.

4. hang wreaths inside!

This is probably my favorite tip of the season. Nothing screams classy Christmas like a wreath with a beautiful bow hanging from your vent hood. Or, small strands of wreaths hanging on each interior door. If you use a real wreath, it will also create a seasonal smell that feels like Christmas.

5. mix textures - bring in warm and fuzzy

We talked about this in the fall as well, but please avoid the pillows with words all over them. Trust me, no one needs a pillow that says “Let it snow” (unless of course it was given to you by a loved one, then display that thing proudly). Instead, grab some sweater textured pillows and blankets, or thick faux animal fur pillows and blankets. Sprinkle those on the couch with deep red and green pillows and you will have a high-end Christmas sofa on your hands.

6. have fun with it!

I know I just gave you 5 tips to follow, but ultimately Christmas decor is all about the memories and having fun with the family. If you have children, hang their handmade ornaments on the front of the tree. Let them throw tinsel (although I hate it) all over the tree and garland. Tape Santa hats on your beautiful framed family photos. At the end of the day, your Christmas decorations should reflect your family and create memories for years to come.

Happy Black Friday shopping and Merry Christmas!
