Ways to spice up subway tile
My personal design style is what I would call transitional. That is a fancy way of saying I like to mix traditional, classic styles with modern touches and shapes. For instance, I love pairing a square shaped sofa with a (fairly ornate) pedestal side table. I tell you this because a staple of my transitional style is the classic subway tile. But, I don’t just want your regular 3x6 brick laid subway tile - I want to make it fun. Here are some ways to do that:
1. Play with the size
A standard subway tile is 3x6. Maybe choose a 2x6, or a 2.5x10….
The longer and skinnier the tile is, the more modern and organic it will feel. It is an easy and beautiful way to put a spin on the most traditional tile.
2. play with the layout
Moving away from the brick-lay pattern will immediately elevate your backsplash. Stacking vertically works well in an organic, earthy, transitional style, while stacking horizontally lends itself to mid century style.
3. mix sizes and layouts
Mixing patterns and tiles is my favorite way to spice up subway tile.
Mixing vertical and horizontal stacked tile (pictured) is typically easiest in a shower or other large wall space. Using this in the 18” between upper and lower cabinets will not represent the tile in its most beautiful state. Find a space with a large amount of wall to be able to add 8-10 horizontal divided rows.
My personal favorite way to mix up subway tiles is to use both 3x6 and a square (3x3) tile. You can use this layout in any space because all of the tiles are represented in one row.
Have fun with your subway tile! Just because it is traditional does not mean it cant be fun!
